1) 오늘의 할 일: 'The Great Gatsby: 제4 장 (1)’ 번역 이어서 하기.

2) [Clarence Endive was from East Egg, as I remember. He came only once, in white knickerbockers, and had a fight with a bum named Etty in the garden. From farther out on the Island came the Cheadles and the O. R. P. Schraeders and the Stonewall Jackson Abrams of Georgia and the Fishguards and the Ripley Snells. Snell was there three days before he went to the penitentiary, so drunk out on the gravel drive that Mrs. Ulysses Swett's automobile ran over his right hand. The Dancies came too and S. B. Whitebait, who was well over sixty, and Maurice A. Flink and the Hammerheads and Beluga the tobacco importer and Beluga's girls.

클레런스 엔다이브도 이스트 에그 출신이었던 것으로 기억한다. 니커보커 바지를 입고 있던 그는 딱 한 번 방문했었는데, 정원에서 에티라는 이름의 거지와 싸움을 벌였었다. 아일랜드 위에 조금 더 먼 곳에서 부터 온 사람들은 치들 부부, O. R. B. 화이트베이트 씨, 그리고 머리스 A. 플링크와 해머헤드 부부, 토바코를 수입하던 벨루가 씨와 그의 여자들도 함께 방문했었다.]: 제4 장에는 이런 부분이 있는데 (똑같은 길이와 비슷한 내용을 지닌 문단이 최소 다섯 개는 더 있다) 이름을 너무도 많을 뿐만 아니라 이름 하나하나에 담긴 문화적 의미가 전달이 되지 않기까지 해서 좀 줄일까, 하다가 우선 일단 한꺼번에 번역을 해보았다.

3) 2)에 담긴 고민이 그대로 보여지는 실제 발췌본: [Once I wrote down on the empty spaces of a time-table the names of those who came to Gatsby's house that summer. It is an old time-table now, disintegrating at its folds and headed "This schedule in effect July 5th, 1922." But I can still read the grey names and they will give you a better impression than my generalities of those who accepted Gatsby's hospitality and paid him the subtle tribute of knowing nothing whatever about him.

저번에는 한 번 내가 마음 먹고 시간표에 빈 구석에다가 여름 동안 개츠비의 집에 온 사람들의 이름을 적어보기도 했다. 맨 위에는 “이 스케쥴은 1922년 7월 5일에 유효합니다"라고 적혀있을 정도로 오래된 일정표여서 이제는 쓸 일이 없던 종이였는데, 여기에 내가 회색 글씨로 적어둔 이름만으로도 내가 횡설수설 말하는 것 보다 개츠비의 집에 와 파티를 즐기고 그에게 경외심을 보이면서도 정작 개츠비에 대해서 아는 것이 하는 인물들이 어떤 사람들인지 더 잘 알 수 있을 것이다.

And the Hornbeams and the Willie Voltaires and a whole clan named Blackbuck who always gathered in a corner and flipped up their noses like goats at whosoever came near. And the Ismays and the Chrysties (or rather Hubert Auerbach and Mr. Chrystie's wife) and Edgar Beaver, whose hair they say turned cotton-white one winter afternoon for no good reason at all.

From West Egg came the Poles and the Mulreadys and Cecil Roebuck and Cecil Schoen and Gulick the state senator and Newton Orchid who controlled Films Par Excellence and Eckhaust and Clyde Cohen and Don S. Schwartze (the son) and Arthur McCarty, all connected with the movies in one way or another. And the Catlips and the Bembergs and G. Earl Muldoon, brother to that Muldoon who afterward strangled his wife. Da Fontano the promoter came there, and Ed Legros and James B. ("Rot-Gut") Ferret and the De Jongs and Ernest Lilly—they came to gamble and when Ferret wandered into the garden it meant he was cleaned out and Associated Traction would have to fluctuate profitably next day.

A man named Klipspringer was there so often and so long that he became known as "the boarder"—I doubt if he had any other home. Of theatrical people there were Gus Waize and Horace O'Donavan and Lester Meyer and George Duckweed and Francis Bull. Also from New York were the Chromes and the Backhyssons and the Dennickers and Russel Betty and the Corrigans and the Kellehers and the Dewars and the Scullys and S. W. Belcher and the Smirkes and the young Quinns, divorced now, and Henry L. Palmetto who killed himself by jumping in front of a subway train in Times Square.

클립스프링어라는 이름의 남자는 파티에 자주 오기도 했으며, 또 올 때마다 굉장히 오랜 시간 있었기 때문에 그는 “승객"이라는 호칭을 얻게 되었다. (아마 그는 그 곳 말고 달리 갈만한 곳이 더 없었던 걸로 보였다.) 연극계 사람들 중에는 거스 웨이즈, 호레스 오도나반, 레스터 메이어, 조지 덕위드와 프란시스 불이 있었다. 또 뉴욕시에서 놀러왔던 크롬 부부와 백하이슨 부부, 데니커 부부와 러셀 베티, 코리간 부부와 켈레허 부부, 드와 부부와 스컬리 부부, S. Benny McClenahan arrived always with four girls. They were never quite the same ones in physical person but they were so identical one with another that it inevitably seemed they had been there before. I have forgotten their names—Jaqueline, I think, or else Consuela or Gloria or Judy or June, and their last names were either the melodious names of flowers and months or the sterner ones of the great American capitalists whose cousins, if pressed, they would confess themselves to be.

베니 맥클레나한은 언제나 네 명의 젊은 여성들과 파티에 입장했다. 여자들 중에 한 번 왔던 사람이 다시 오는 경우는 단 한 번도 없었지만 그녀들은 매번 너무도 똑같이 생겨서 매번 같은 사람들이 오는 것 같기도 했다. 잘 기억나지는 않지만, 당장 머릿속에 떠오르는 이름은 자켈린, 콘수엘라, 아니면 글로리아, 주디, 준 정도의 이름들이고 그녀들의 성은 언제나 꽃이나 달(month)의 멜로디가 느껴지는 듯한 부드러운 이름들 아니면 미국의 유명한 자본가들의 성을 따랐고, 그들에게 조금만 강요하듯이 질문해도 그들은 언제나 순진하게 그들과의 혈연관계를 밝혔다.

In addition to all these I can remember that Faustina O'Brien came there at least once and the Baedeker girls and young Brewer who had his nose shot off in the war and Mr. Albrucksburger and Miss Haag, his fiancée, and Ardita Fitz-Peters, and Mr. P. Jewett, once head of the American Legion, and Miss Claudia Hip with a man reputed to be her chauffeur, and a prince of something whom we called Duke and whose name, if I ever knew it, I have forgotten.

이 많은 사람들 말고도 또 기억이 나는 인물로는 파우스티나 오브라이언과 배데커 가의 딸들, 그리고 전쟁에서 코에 총을 맞았다던 젊은 브루어 군과 앨브럭스버거 씨와 그의 약혼녀였던 해그 씨, 그리고 아르디타 피츠피터스, 한 때 군단을 이끌었었던 P. 쥬엣 씨, 그녀의 운전사라고 너무도 강조하고 다니던 남자와 함께 왔던 클라우디아 힙, 우리가 기사(Duke)라는 호칭으로 불렀던 기억나지 않는 무언가의 왕자도 있었는데, 설령 그의 이름을 한 번 들었다고 한들 지금쯤 당연히 까먹었을 것이다.]

4) 시간을 나타내는 한시, 두시, 세시, … 다 원래 띄어 쓰는게 맞기는 한데 붙여 쓰는 것도 허용되는데다가 그렇게 하는 쪽이 훨씬 더 자연스럽게 읽히기 때문에 그렇게 하는 쪽으로 하자.
